I wonder how many people in the cinema thought of "Here comes the ship horde" as soon as this scene popped up.

Actually not that opposite, in fact very similar. I can recall (vaguely) reading LotR at about the age of 12 (though I admit I didn't read all of it, significant tracts in the second two books never got read until after the movies - parts like Helm's Deep and Minas Tirith) and a few more readings through my teens (I don't recall when exactly I got the Silm, but I read it before the movies, but the Hobbit I didn't read until after).
I got online in my early 20s (I discovered yaoi about a year after I got my own computer) and I think I've been hugely resistant to Rule 34, so barring an occasional "How the hell could those two ever get on enough to fuck?" reaction, I have never truly held anything as being above shipping.

Like I said on another deviation, the whole fandom will be bawling it's eyes out. I wouldn't have it any different, it makes "They all live!" AUs more enjoyable.

It was the reverse for me: I was twelve the first time I read The Lord of The Rings, and I did not get into slash fiction until my early twenties. :) The mere idea of any new pairings was met with a lot of resistance, since the source material was so well established in my head. But I'm not as familiar with The Hobbit (just read it once, did not like it that much), so I guess I'm more open minded about it. ^^

I very much hope that Jackson won't change canon where character deaths are concerned. Call me masochistic, I just love a good dramatic death scene. I tend to dissolve into tears, but it makes the experience of the movie as a whole that much more intense for me (or the experience of the book, for that matter; I'm crying my eyes out every time I read Theoden's death scene).

Yeah, well a good few of the dwarves have that Gimli-asthetic (not to mention Glóin, who was design to look like Gimli specifically, due to their relation), but I am glad some of them are less so, therefore more audience-appealing. The only sad part is the the three best-looking are also the ones slated to die (and I really don't expect PJ would change that, in fact I expect him to milk the death scenes for as much emotion as possible).

Well at the time I got into LotR I was a die-hard slasher. I wouldn't have found a canon pairing I wanted to read, no matter how much I supported them objectively, due to my avoidance of het smut (3 years in the Transformers fandom with it's stickyfic cured me of that). The nearest I came to het was when I was RP'ing Varda. She got into a relationship with Elrohir (well, it was a threesome).

Richard is quite gorgeous without the beard too.

I actually avoided as much media as I could about The Hobbit. I didn't watch the trailer, I didn't even check out the full cast, I wanted to stay as much in the dark as possible. :) So yeah, the hot dwarves took me by surprise, especially Thorin. Also, I had imagined a different movie altogether. This was much more epic and dramatic than I remembered the book to be, the tone is quite darker (so yes, I *had* imagined a whole cast of Gimlis xD).

Martin Freeman as Bilbo is the most brilliant casting choice I've seen in years. He's impeccable in that role, and I must admit that he's one of the main reasons I wanted to see the movie in the first place. And I completely agree, that hobbit wig makes him even more adorable than he already is.

As for pairings, The Lord of the Rings and its 'verse was one of the rare fictions in which I had strictly stuck to canon up until now (huge fan of Faramir/Eowen ever since I read the book for the first time). I did pick up on those Aragorn/Legolas vibes, but that - or any other non-canon pairing - just didn't push any of my fangirl buttons. But THIS, for some reason, does. Go figure. To me, it ended up being "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Ship".

... and I'm afraid I have to disagree. I much prefer Richard Armitage sans facial hair. :p But still, his Thorin is mightily good looking. Hot dwarves, who would've thought?
Mimi-Sardinia Featured By Owner Jan 12, 2013  Hobbyist General Artist
Well I can't say the same for myself about avoiding LotR pairings, I spent a year in 2004 in the fandom and drifted all the way from a human/human pairing right through elfslash into the very pairing I was avoiding, infamous Aragorn/Legolas.

Then I got distracted by Cloud Strife's chocobo hair.

The Hobbit however did not surprise me much at all. Hot dwarves? I looked at it as "Oh, well, what did expect from Peter Jackson? A whole cast of Gimlis*?"

(* No disrespect to John Rhys Davies, but Gimli never particularly held my interest - besides amusement at the Jaws quote in the EE drinking scene.)

But I saw pictures before I watched the movies so I knew there were hot dwarves, and I'd even seen a picture of the hug scene and knew it'd caught some shippers too. Besides, Martin Freeman is cute (doubly so in the hobbit wig) and Richard Armitage is gorgeous (triply so in the Thorin make-up and wig). I was expecting to ship them. ;)

Marvelous rendition. Stumbled on this piece by accident, but I will definitely go through your gallery. Your brushwork is amazing, as is your sense of light, colour and composition. Instant favourite.
ChibiLeen Featured By Owner Jan 12, 2013
"This is the part of the movie that galvanised thousands of shippers."

Guilty as charged. I've spent all these years dodging every single LotR slash pairing the Internet threw at me, simply because none of it was working for me in Tolkien's universe. But this particular moment in the movie finally made me yield. It was just so simple and powerful at the same time, how could I resist the thought? And the sneaky bunny won't leave my head now, I'm stuck with it.
