Several years after Erebor was retaken, a shadow returns to Dol Guldur and the Elvenking is taken prisoner by Sauron’s forces. When armies fail to save him, Thorin takes a page out of Bilbo’s book and slips into the old fortress alone to rescue his former enemy, still perplexed by the grace the Elvenking showed him after the Battle of Five Armies. It is the journey home afterward, through the dark and twisted miles of Mirkwood, that will make or break a delicate affection and understanding between the two leaders of nations.
